Join the Climate March

In case you haven’t noticed, there’s a host of environmental crises out there. Fortunately, there are hundreds of millions of people and countless groups working to improve things and mitigate the worst effects of these crises. But, there’s still a lot of work to be done, including increasing awareness regarding the urgency of taking action now as well as, the actual actions.

Greta Thunberg, a teenager from Sweden, is famous for her personal action of ‘striking’ from school (every Friday), walking to the national par- liament building in Stockholm, and passing out leaflets, calling for bold action. Initially a solitary figure dismissed by her elders, Greta has become an international symbol of the climate action movement. On Fridays in March and then May of 2019, millions of youth in 125 countries joined her in strikes and protests.

There will be a worldwide week of climate pro- tests, strikes, and assorted actions, inspired by Greta, starting this September 20th—three days before the UN’s climate emergency summit in New York—and continuing to September 27th. These dates, (September 20th-27th, 2019) are only a beginning to the sustained mass mobili- zation that will be needed to pressure world gov- ernments to take action in line with climate sci- ence and justice.

There will be a week of activities in Corvallis, starting with local high school students striking on September 20th, and followed by educational events and workshops devoted to climate action. While more information will be forthcoming in early September, an important heads up is that there will be three marches and a rally in Corvallis on September 27th. The plan is for the three marches: one from the university, one from an area high school, and one comprised of local faith groups to converge at the riverfront for the rally. The marches and rally will be from approximately 11:00am-2:00pm. Here is the website for our local action: https://corvallisclimateaction.weebly.com/events.html.

We hope people from Beit Am and other faith groups participate in the march on September 27th.
